Exploring Monaco with an 85mm lens…
The 35mm lens is undeniably a popular choice for street photography due to its versatility and ability to capture a wider perspective while maintaining a natural look. Similarly, the 50mm lens is favored for its balanced view that closely resembles what the human eye sees.
However, my preference for the 85mm lens brings an interesting dimension to my street photography. Its longer focal length allows for unique compositions, isolating subjects from the background and adding an element of compression to the image.
It's exciting to use a familiar tool after a long time. When I started using the 85mm lens for street photography again, I had to change how I took photos. I had to step back a lot (way back) to catch what I wanted in the frame - this means that you can actually fall back into the background and be more discreet - I also had to rethink how to compose the pictures to make the most of what the lens can do. This experience reminded me how important it is to be flexible and open to the creative changes each differing focal length lens can demand.
Exploring different lenses certainly broadens your creative horizons, and by incorporating the 85mm into your street photography, you're not only shaking things up but also elevating your adaptability and artistic development.
Having said this, it's evident to me, that I missed out on capturing several potentially brilliant photos due to inadequate preparation for this particular focal length. Regrettably, spontaneous close-up portraits were among the missed opportunities.
As I mentioned, understanding the focal lengths of each lens and adapting to them appropriately is crucial. It is always fun to shake things up a bit and try something different… have a go!!
